Straight Priorities

The budget - strained by ever-more spending demands - is reeling. Crime is on an uptick - overshadowed by the miasma of Amy Klobuchar's Minneapolis, but still unsettling. City infrastructure needs a ton of work.

So what does the Saint Paul City Council work on?

Fighting the plague of individual cigarettes:

City Council President Kathy Lantry, sponsor of the ordinance introduced Wednesday, said she has received multiple complaints from her constituents that the majority of single cigarettes sold are bought by minors.

She said research shows that communities where individual cigarettes are peddled have higher smoking rates among young people.

"I get a lot of complaints in my office," she said at Wednesday's meeting.

Let me guess - it was the same researchers (and complainers) that led the city to ban smoking in bars. Right?

It's a ruse - Kathy Lantry hates poor people and this is how she grinds them under her high heel.

Who buys cigarettes one at a time? People who can't afford to buy them by the pack. Like who? People with low incomes, such as temporarily underemployed members of historically oppressed minority groups, undocumented guest laborers, unmarried head-of-household public assistance recipients, seasoned citizens forced to divert precious resources from their daily dog food rations and, of course, minors.

And where do those poor people live in St. Paul? Not in Benanev's Shining District On The Highland Hill, but right smack in Lantry's East Side.

Oh, she's perfectly willing to give legal breaks to the Rich so they can buy their cigarettes by the pack, the carton, even by the boxcar load. But let one poor person stretch a shaking hand up from Pig's Eye's muck, seeking the brief savor of a few short puffs, and she smacks him down with the full weight of the law.

Disgraceful, that's what it is.

Good writing, nate!

Typical leftie crap-let the HUGE things go (end of the West as we know it) and pick on the little things that matter not one whit (Christian memorial crosses on government-owned land).
